November Bits and Pieces

Hello families!

Here are some bits and pieces for November:

  • Today I have sent home a conference sign up sheet.  Please have your student return these to me ASAP as I schedule conferences on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Field Trip Permission Slips are due this Wednesday!  Please make sure to fill the form out completely!  I can only take a limited amount of parents to chaperone.  If you stated on the form that you would like to chaperone, I will let you know by Wednesday evening if I have space for you.
  • AR reading requirement--Please check in with your student to see if she/he is close to meeting the AR requirement. (3 fiction, 3 non fiction) The deadline for meeting this requirement is next week, Thursday, 11/14.
  • We are diving into technology!
    • This month our homeroom will begin using technology--Chromebooks and iPads--to research and present topics in Social Studies.
    • Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Morikawa's math classes have started integrating Khan Academy into daily lessons.
    • In the computer lab, Mrs. Sancheti is teaching our students keyboarding skills.
  • If you are planning a trip and your child will be absent for more than 4 school days, you  MUST contact the school office at least 10 school days in advance to make arrangements for an Independent Study.  Without an Independent Study, students who are absent for an unexcused reason for more than 4 days will be dis-enrolled from Country Lane.  Don't let this happen to your child!  Contact the office at 408-874-3400 as soon as you know your child will be missing school.  Thank you!

Blogs

Hello Families!

As you have noticed, I have not been updating my blog as often as I would like. In trying to determine the best way to list down daily homework, the 4th grade teachers will be listing their own flex group's homework.  In order to see what is being assigned in your child's math or ELA flex, you will need to go to the specific teacher's blog. I would still like to emphasize that it is each student's responsibility to write down her/his assignments--blogs are for back-up!

September Bits & Pieces

Hello Families!

Please accept my apologies for not updating the blog this week--almost everyday I had to rush out after school to attend a meeting or training.

As your students may have told you, it has been a whirlwind of a week!  We started ELA flexing, Math flexing, as well as science rotations.  The students are doing a lot of moving! The students are getting to know their new teachers and class expectations.

In writing, we have been focusing on sensory details, and using words that make our writing more interesting.  We brainstormed using Circle Maps, and then classified our information using Tree Maps.  Teams worked collaboratively to create a Tree Map for Sensory Details.

Today, we started our Art Fundraiser for science camp.  The theme of our art is flowers (in the style of Georgia O'keeffe.  In the next couple of weeks be on the look out for order forms.

Please emphasize homework responsibility!  With having 2-4 different teachers per day, it takes extra effort from the students to make sure all their homework is written down and put in their homework folders.  For the first few weeks of flexing, I will take extra steps to remind them to pack all they need for homework.

I would also like to ask you to please emphasize to your child to put her/his homework back into the homework folder and backpack once completed.  I've heard several students tell me, "I did my homework, but I left it at home."

Have a great weekend!
