It is HOT this week!

HOMEWORK:  Math flex-The Scene of the Crime worksheet, Newsela.com article "Scientists Race. . ." Jiji 30-minutes

I'm sure you've all noticed that we are having very warm weather this week!  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  I still believe layers are the best for early morning temperatures.  We are hydrating and taking cool-down breaks after recess and PE.

This Friday is our annual Field Day.  The forecast is showing that it will still be in the 80s.  Please make sure to send your child with a bottle of water as we will be outside most of the day.

PBL
We are wrapping up our Social Studies PBL project this week.  Students have been working in hard in their groups finalizing the location for the 22nd Mission.  Look out for their projects at Open House on 5/28.

ELA
This week we continued and extended our Figurative Language unit.  Students used what they know about figurative language and incorporated it into a stories.

We are also studying Myths,Legends, and Fairy Tales.  Students received story starters and are creating their own myth, legend and fairy tale.

Math
In math all students are studying Perimeter & Area.  We are learning how to find the perimeter and area of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back Room 7!

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break.  Now that we are all refreshed, we are going to give our 120% for the remainder of the year!

Homework:

Math Flex--Factor Tree worksheet

Homeroom--Word Ladder (both sides), Newsela-check your "binder" for new assignments.  There are 2 new articles I would like you to read and take the the quiz.  If you previously took a quiz and did not get at least 75%, I have reset it for you; re-read it, and take the quiz again.

Room 7 updates:

Math flex--We are revisiting prime numbers and learning how to use Factor Trees to find the prime factorization of a number.

Social Studies--We are working hard everyday to find the most suitable location for the 22nd Mission.  Groups have researched other Missions in California and are narrowing down possible locations.  Many groups had "ah ha" moments and realized that they need to study maps thoroughly so that they don't accidentally put their Mission in the desert or on a mountain!

ELA--We are restarting our Homophone of the week.  This week's homophones are "brake" and "break."  As you may have noticed, I have introduced a new nonfiction resource, Newsela.com.  I am using this website as another resource to teach nonfiction reading.  I LOVE this website because it gives students the opportunity to read current newspaper articles that are modified to different reading levels.  It is a free, ad-free resource that students can use anytime.  Encourage your child to read any article on the website--it should make for wonderful dinner-time discussions!
In writing, we have been working on silly, collaborative stories.  Students worked in groups and took turns writing each part of the story.  As you can imagine, these stories turned out to be wild and funny!  From there, each student took the collaborative story and is working to make it her/his own by adding to it, editing it, and making it more creative.

Science--Room 7 is back with me for science rotations.  We will begin the second part of the earth science unit. The focus will be slow/fast changes on earth, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

Smarter Balanced Testing--4th grade will begin testing next week.  Please click on the link to the left to watch a video describing the testing.
